Older one's iPod

Her sister had been vocal about her want--an iPod for Christmas. My ex (their mom) and I, with the neon "sucker" signs on the foreheads, made it happen. The older one, however, is the quiet one. She wanted one, but hadn't said anything about it.

Well, this year in school was an amazing turnaround from the previous year at the other school (and with a less than wonderful teacher). Both with her grades, her helpfulness to the students *and* teachers, and her self-determination, she really deserved a reward, and her mom and I agreed on it.

So on Friday night I took them to them to the Apple store in the mall (I get a little bit of a corporate discount there). The same store that was premiering the world's newest, high-tech phone. The store in which people were lined up since midnight the night before. Yeah, I went in to buy her an iPod at the grand opening of the iPhone! (Why not turn a shopping trip into an adventure?!)

Well, the line was gone in an hour. The salesman said "You're not buying an iPhone!?" "How good is the camera?" "Two megapixels." "Uh...no...thanks anyway."

600 bucks for a multi-media phone/browser/MP3 with a mediocre camera. I don't think so! (Okay, if the camera was hot--5 megapixel or so-- Yeah, I really might have thought about it.)

Anyway, we went home, dumped all her music onto it, and she still only used something like 13 percent of its capacity. She didn't seem thrilled when we first got it, but after playing with it with her music on it, I could see that subtle look in her eyes of "wow, I'm so happy!!!!!"

Yeah, it's definitely a being-a-dad thing.
